Sending Management Commands to an ezmlm Mailing ListThe software we use for mailing lists - ezmlm - simplifies their management by using specific email addresses for different commands. Instead of requiring users to include commands in the email subject or body, ezmlm processes commands simply by sending an empty email to the designated command address. This makes managing subscriptions, retrieving messages, and accessing archives fast and efficient. In all commands listed here, you need to replace the "mailinglist" part of the address with the actual name of the mailing list, and "example.org" with your actual domain name. For example, if your mailing list is called subscribers@mydomain.com, in order to get the FAQ for this list, you need to send an email to subscribers-faq@mydomain.com. Basic CommandsGet help: If you are unsure how to begin, you can send an email to mailinglist-help@example.org. You will get a reply containing helpful instructions and command information. To contact the list owner, send an email to mailinglist-owner@example.org. Subscribe: To join a mailing list, send an email to mailinglist-subscribe@example.org. You will receive a confirmation request. Simply reply to complete your subscription. Unsubscribe: To leave a mailing list, send an email to mailinglist-unsubscribe@example.org. A confirmation email will be sent; reply to confirm your removal from the list. Check Subscription Status: If you are unsure whether you are subscribed, send an email to mailinglist-query@example.org to check your status. Retrieve Messages: To get a specific message: Send an email to mailinglist-get.123@example.org. To retrieve the latest 30 messages: Use mailinglist-get@example.org. To access a specific message range: Send an email to mailinglist-get.45_67@example.org. Message Archive Index: To get an index of the latest 100-200 messages, send an email to mailinglist-index@example.org. To get an index of a specific range, use mailinglist-index.300_399@example.org. Get FAQs and General Info: To receive general information about the mailing list, email mailinglist-info@example.org. For frequently asked questions, send an email to mailinglist-faq@example.org. Retrieve Entire Threads: To fetch all messages in a particular discussion thread, send an email to mailinglist-thread.45@example.org. Subscribing to an ezmlm Mailing ListTo subscribe, send a blank email to mailinglist-subscribe@example.org. You will receive a confirmation request - reply to that email to finalize your subscription. If you want to subscribe with an email address different from the one you're sending from, modify the command by replacing @ in the email address you are subscribing with = and appending it to the command. For example: This feature is particularly useful if you manage multiple email addresses and want to receive messages at a specific inbox. Unsubscribing from an ezmlm Mailing ListIf you wish to leave the mailing list, send an email to mailinglist-unsubscribe@example.org. A confirmation request will be sent to your inbox - simply reply to finalize your removal from the list. If you are unsure which email address is subscribed, check the headers of a message from the list. The "Return-Path" header will show the address that is registered with the list. You can then send an unsubscribe request for the correct email address. You can do so by replacing @ in the email address you are subscribing with = and appending it to the command. For example: Sending Messages to an ezmlm Mailing ListTo participate in discussions, compose an email and send it to mailinglist@example.org. Ensure that your email has a clear subject line; messages with no subject may be rejected. Some lists only allow messages from subscribed addresses. If you encounter posting restrictions, ensure you have subscribed with the correct email address. If your message gets rejected for some reason, you will receive a reply that contains an explanation on why your message was rejected. For example, the message might be too short or too long. You can then correct the problem, and try again. Replying to MessagesUnderstanding how replies are handled ensures your response reaches the intended audience without unnecessary duplication. To reply only to the sender: Use the standard "Reply" function in your email client. To reply to the entire mailing list: Use "Reply to all." However, be mindful of unnecessary addresses and make sure you remove them so only the actual mailing list address is left. Accessing the Message ArchiveThe message archive allows users to retrieve past messages efficiently. Some mailing lists restrict archive access to subscribers. If you receive an access denial, ensure that your email address is properly subscribed or update your subscription email. To retrieve a specific message: Email mailinglist-get.123@example.org. This command will retrieve message 123. To view recent subjects and authors: Send an email to mailinglist-index@example.org. The message you will receive as a reply will also tell you the latest message's number. To obtain multiple messages in a range: Use mailinglist-get.123_456@example.org. This command will retrieve messages with numbers between 123 and 222, since only 100 messages are allowed per request. To get the rest, please send new commands. To fetch an entire discussion thread: Email mailinglist-thread.123@example.org. This command will retrieve the thread containing message 123. Threads are determined by the subject line of the message. Receiving Digests Instead of Individual EmailsIf you prefer to receive grouped emails instead of individual messages, you can subscribe to a digest version of the list. To do so, send an email to mailinglist-digest-subscribe@example.org. Digest subscriptions are useful for managing high-traffic lists, as they reduce inbox clutter while keeping you updated on discussions. To unsubscribe from a digest, send an email to mailinglist-digest-unsubscribe@example.org. You can also subscribe and unsubscribe different email addresses to digest lists by using the same method described in the "Subscribing to an ezmlm Mailing List" and "Unsubscribing from an ezmlm Mailing List" sections. By following these commands and best practices, you can efficiently manage your ezmlm mailing list subscriptions, retrieve important information, and participate in discussions with ease.
